Maintaining Your Storage Medium With Humidifier Solution, Jars & Drymsitat Solution
Whether you store your favorite cigars in a drawer, a box, a jar or a humidor, maintaining it so that it retains the proper level of relative humidity is an important practice to learn. If you do not maintain your storage media properly, your cigars will become soggy if too much humidity builds up, leading to them accumulating mold. And, if they are allowed to dry out without proper humidity levels, they lose all flavor and burn up way too quickly.
Proper storage maintenance is very easy to do, whether you use a humidor or a jar. The keys to this essential process are humidifier solution, a hygrometer and drymistat tubes. Even if you are using a jar to store your cigars, following these tips will keep your collection at the right level of moisture, retaining their flavor for many smokes to come.
Humidifier Solution
To properly prepare your storage media after removing the cigars and cleaning it, rub down the inside of the humidor or other storage media with a 50/50 mix of distilled water and propylene glycol. The propylene glycol will humidify the storage media, absorb any excess liquid and kill off any bacteria that could damage your cigar stock. Just apply, and let it dry before replacing the stock.
For quick cleaning and humidifying, remove the cigars and heat the humidifier solution up in the microwave, and then place it in the empty humidor for about 24 hours. If your storage media has its own electric humidifier and hygrometer, you will need to maintain both by cleaning and calibrating at least once every three months.
To clean the humidifier, empty it out, rinse with distilled water, and let dry. Afterwards, refill it with the recommended distilled water mixture recommended by the manufacturer. Clean the hygrometer needle in the same method, and recalibrate it by placing its tip in a bottle cap’s worth of distilled water mixed with a pinch of salt. Leave it set for six hours, sealed up in a bag, and check the gauge. It should be reading at a relative humidity level of 75%.
Maintaining 70% Humidity
In storage media that has attached humidifier and hygrometer combos this is fairly easy to do. Always be sure to check your hygrometer’s calibration regularly, and maintain the proper level of distilled water in the humidifier. Never substitute tap or bottled water for the distilled water, ever, because they may contain minerals that can clog the humidifier, and run the risk of transferring organic materials to the cigars and causing mold.
When your storage media is a jar, it gets a little trickier. Drymistat tubes or crystal tubes are filled with highly absorbent crystals that will release moisture through pores in the lid. As the moisture depletes, the crystals shrink, and can be reactivated by filling the tube with distilled water. Each refill will last on an average about 4 to 6 weeks, and can be refilled at least 60 times before needing to be replaced.
